The Sacred Romance, Brent Curtis & John Eldredge
Book Review by Carol Kim
No eye has seen, no ear has heard,
no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those
who love him.
(1Cor. 2:9)
If we were to delve into the obscure crevices of our memory, each person would be able to remember a time long ago when we dreamt of a perfect life, full of adventure, romance and true love, full of dragons to conquer and happy endings. In short, a life worthy of being lived. But that was a long time ago. Most of us are unsure just when and how this dream flitted away to become now only a distant non-memory. What happened? When did we become resigned to "reality"? When did we come to the "rational" and "mature" conclusion that real life was just not like that, and that real life meant jobs and mortgages and real responsibilities? What happened to the romance and the adventure? If those things were only the childish imaginings of a time long past, why then, in the midst of a productive workday, do we spontaneously feel an acute loss of something, such a despair of the drudgery that has become real life?
In The Sacred Romance, we are reminded of the adventure that God draws us into. It is an adventure where we are His bride and He is our Hero. Where His great and radical love for us has moved Him to give us life with full knowledge that we would betray Him, lie to Him, and forsake Him. Where He chances to give us free will to love Him, even when He has the power to demand our devotion. Where His passion for us would compel Him to continue to pursue us despite our infidelity and self-prostitution to other gods. Where His inexorable love for us causes Him to sacrifice the life of His only begotten Son to redeem us. Where throughout the ages, He continues to pursue us by the precious gift of His godly friendship and counsel through the Holy Spirit. Our God is no ordinary God. He is a wild, radical adventurer. He is a lover of cosmic proportions. He is the quiet, almost imperceptible, yet real and persistent desire of our hearts to transcend this life and the "less wild" lovers of this world posing as work, alcohol, sex and other distractions. We have all been, at one time or another, trapped in the descending vortex of the comfortable, whether it be in the form of the wrong relationship, the dead-end job, the rut of daily life, the boredom of sitting in a church pew. What keeps us tied to the "comfort" is not contentment, but rather fear of the unknown, fear of venturing out and engaging because we are afraid of rejection or pain or failure. And it is often at these times when the enemy arrives opportunistically onto the scene, whispering lies such as, "You don't really have anything good to offer" or "Life will never get better...just live and be content with what you've got". But we need not have this fear of the unknown or force ourselves to be content in the status quo because when we enter God's story, WE ALREADY KNOW THE ENDING. He promises that both the ending and journey will be more than we ever dreamed, because we simply cannot outdream God.
The authors encourage us by urging us on, into God's story, into His adventure. But to survive the sometimes bumpy journey, we are reminded that we will triumph by recalling "our Love's past deeds on our behalf and His promise of continued faithfulness to us." The survival of many marriages depends not only on dogged commitment to one's betrothed, but also by remembering the romance before the bills rolled in, before arguments over the dishes erupted, before the stresses of daily life turned our hearts away from our beloved and the romance once promised. The sacred romance that we share with our God is no different. He asks us to truly remember who He is and what He has done to love us, and with gentle whisperings, He beckons us to a transcendent life with Him. Dare we step into the Romance to which He calls us?

Hymns - Ancient and Modern
I imagine the original writers must have been bursting with inward fervour and passion for their God, able only to legitimately express it through song. It excites me to be connected to these Christ-lovers of the past, to the present where I am situated, and to the future generations of Christ-followers. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever... read more

Shattered Dreams
I have been praying daily ever since I became a Christian, and thankfully, I cannot say I've ever come to a place of despair where I felt that God had left me. However, I must admit that at times, I wonder why I bother to pray at all when God appears to allow bad things to happen anyway... read more

Recovering the Soul's Delight in Christ Through Fasting
When it comes to fasting, some modern day Christians might say, "Why do we need to fast? Isn't this an outdated practice reserved for ascetics? We live under grace. We don't need to prove our love for God by acts of deprivation." It's true - we do live under God's lavish, hope-giving, life-sustaining grace. To such critics I would point out that fasting is a clarifying and sanctifying experience, unique among the spiritual disciplines in its potential to help us understand what we treasure and what controls us... read more

Soul Survivor 2002: Glimpes of Glory
I bought in my first Soul Survivor CD 1996. I recall reading the CD cover, examining the worship leaders and song titles, thinking to myself, "I like David Ruis, but who are Matt Redman and Delirious?" Once I started listening to it, I felt like I was being drawn right into the event itself.
