“Streams in the Desert”

by L.B. Cowman

book review by Joanna Marriage

Are you having trouble connecting with God on a regular basis? Are you unsure of what to do during quiet time? Is your New Year’s resolution to have daily devotional time with God?

If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to any of the above, I highly recommend this 366 daily devotional reading guide, “Streams in the Desert”, by L.B. Cowman. Although first published in 1925, this book was recently updated using the NIV text and today’s language by James Reimann, editor of “My Utmost for His Highest, Updated Edition”.

When the Resource Table Ministry decided to feature a devotional, I knew L.B. Cowman was an author I would fully endorse. I have read several devotionals but I’ve found that I couldn’t connect with God using them. This book is the only devotional where I caught a glimpse of God’s heart and His encouraging plan for my life no matter what circumstance I faced.

L.B. Cowman and her husband were missionaries to East Asia, including Korea, in the early 1900’s. When her husband became ill, they returned to the U.S. where she nursed him for six years until he passed away. During her deep suffering and anguish, God spoke words of comfort that were streams in her desert place. Now, we also can receive wisdom and strength the comfort she received.

Included in this devotional are her writings, quotes from assorted theologians, poetry and Bible verses that form a collage of inspired truth for every generation. This book is filled with God’s message of hope, encouragement and comfort for each day!

If you’re looking to kick-start your quiet times this January 1st, why not try this timeless classic, “Streams in the Desert”? It would also make a great Christmas gift. Hint! Hint! No, I already have my copy…it’s for you!!!

How to Pray for Healing
“Bible-believing Christians certainly acknowledge that God is all-powerful. They use, without hesitation, the theological term “omnipotent” when describing God. However, we in [North] America sometimes have a difficult time bringing a practical application of this belief into our daily lives. Even in life-giving churches, the great majority of members rarely, if ever, see sick people instantly healed when they pray for them... read more
