The 21 Most Powerful Minutes in a Leader's Day - by Dr. John Maxwell

Book Review (Yong Kim)

Are you a leader? Do you have leadership potential? Or, are leaders of a different breed and few? Dr. John Maxwell, the author of The 21 Most Powerful Minutes in a Leader's Day makes it clear where he stands on these questions by prefacing the first chapter with the statement, "Every person has the potential to be a leader." This book is not for the "few", but for all who recognize the truth that we do have the potential to be leaders and want to develop their leadership skills.

The 21 Most Powerful Minutes in a Leader's Day is based upon Dr. Maxwell's New York Times' bestseller The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership.  It can be used as a companion to the bestseller, but can also be used on its own. The difference with this book is that it "is a leadership development tool. It's not meant to be read through in a sitting. It's designed to be consumed in daily bites and digested slowly"

Each week centers on one 'Law of Leadership' and opens with an excerpt from the earlier The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. Days 1 to 4 focuses on one aspect of the law, opening with the Leadership Thought for Today and ends with Today's Question for Reflection The fifth day is the shortest in length and is always titled 'Bringing the Law to Life'. This framework makes the book an ideal tool to be used as part of anyone's 'quiet time'.

In addition, Dr. Maxwell refers to a biblical character either as a 'good example' or a 'poor example' to illustrate the important points of the Law; this allows us to become more acquainted with some of the characters of the Bible and to discover some things about them which we may not have thought of before.

The title is The 21 Most Powerful Minutes in a Leader's Day; however, the material for each day can be read in less than 21 minutes. Dr. Maxwell keeps each day simple and succinct so that one can read the Scripture passage(s) and his comments in less than 15 minutes. However, the 'power' comes not just from reading, but in Dr. Maxwell's own words, 'consuming,' and 'digesting,' what one has just read. By setting aside 30 minutes each day, I am able to read through the Scriptures, questions and main points, as well as to take some time to journal my prayers and thoughts. This allows me to use the other two days of the week to review my thoughts, re-read some of the highlights, and pray over specifically what I can apply for my own development.

With its real-life examples and practical applications, the book transcends beyond 'feel good' and 'ideal' theories to something more concrete that one can practice daily. Do you believe that you have the potential to be a leader? Dr. John Maxwell believes this; and if you do as well, pick up this book and begin discovering and developing the leadership potential that God has given you.

I imagine the original writers must have been bursting with inward fervour and passion for their God, able only to legitimately express it through song.  It excites me to be connected to these Christ-lovers of the past, to the present where I am situated, and to the future generations of Christ-followers. Recovering the Soul's Delight in Christ Through Fasting

When it comes to fasting, some modern day Christians might say, "Why do we need to fast? Isn't this an outdated practice reserved for ascetics? We live under grace. We don't need to prove our love for God by acts of deprivation." It's true - we do live under God's lavish, hope-giving, life-sustaining grace. To such critics I would point out that fasting is a clarifying and sanctifying experience, unique among the spiritual disciplines in its potential to help us understand what we treasure and what controls us... read more
