Album Review

Come Together – by Third Day

Come Together - Third DayCD Review (Juno Park)

Mac Powell, the lead singer of this Georgia based band had this to say in a recent interview:

"worship is truly a move of God through his people." Each song, whether it be meditative ballad or a heavy southern blues tune, resonates such belief with indelible conviction. Come Together is Third Day's fifth album and is the one that won them both a Dove and Grammy award. This is no small feat: that a Christian band can be recognized by their Christian contemporaries for its dedication to worship, and at the same time, be respected by the secular world for its obvious talent and pure "musicianship".

Come Together aptly describes the nature of this album, as it crystallizes the maturation process from its previous endeavours. Third Day's previous works were awesome in their own right, but were not multidimensional in style. Come Together in many respects blends many styles from folk, rock and country. Yet the heart and soul of Third Day's musical identity is undeniably grounded in southern blues, and is a thread that is seamlessly woven into every track. Show Me Your Glory, is a soulful blend of a traditional worship, layered with sweet guitar riffs and the unforgettable voice of Mac Powell. He has such a unique voice, so rich in tone and versatility that, in one song, you are drawn into meditative worship, and in another, you are blown away in a booming groove. Get On is one such example. Mac Powell's controlled 'growl' is skillfully supported by the tight guitar work of Brad Avery and Mark Lee and by the phenomenal bass work of Tai Anderson. Moreover, I Don't Know and Nothing Compares are two particularly moving songs, the words of which speak clearly of the band's lyrical talent and make a clear statement of faith.

Third Day is a band like no other. They rock. I initially found contemporary Christian music to mean a snooze session of really boring music with good intentions, or on the other extreme, really good music but without faith-based substance. Third Day has restored my faith in the future of Christian music, and in many ways affirmed my faith in the poetic beauty of worship. One needs neither a theological degree nor a musical background to appreciate the real honesty of this band. They show an incredible depth of talent and immense diversity in their musicianship, and most importantly, they never stray from their message of love and faith in the God that inspired their music.

How to Pray for Healing
“Bible-believing Christians certainly acknowledge that God is all-powerful. They use, without hesitation, the theological term “omnipotent” when describing God. However, we in [North] America sometimes have a difficult time bringing a practical application of this belief into our daily lives. Even in life-giving churches, the great majority of members rarely, if ever, see sick people instantly healed when they pray for them... read more
